Candles aren’t just for creating cosy atmospheres in winter, says Mary Linehan…
…they’re ideal to give your mood a little lift at any time of year, and there’s a whole industry devoted to making your life smell sweet.
Liberty – perhaps the best store on earth! – doesn’t devote counter space to scented candles, it has a ‘room’ devoted to them, and if there’s such a category as ‘haute candles’ then Liberty is the place to go to find them. For some you will be expected to pay ‘haute’ prices, but with candles you really do get what you pay for… Here’s a a taster…
Cire Trudon has been making candles since 1643, supplying the court of Louis XIV and the greatest cathedrals and churches in France. Who could fail to be enchanted by Odalisque (£50)? – a wonderful veil of citrus, wood bark and orange blossom and a heart note of vanilla. Just heaven!
DL & Co tout themselves as alchemists and purveyors of curious goods, and if there’s cute candle range not to be missed, this is it. Their scalloped votives are fabulous indoors and out. I love the sinful Absinthe or the colourful and fun Lady Rhubarb (£35).
Other ranges to check out include Le Labo, Dyptique, Abhana and Neom, whose new spring fragrances are Serenity, a sensual blend of vanilla and sandalwood to comfort and seduce, and Sumptuous, a delightfully sexy combination of opulent rose and neroli. Spoil yourself with a three wick super candle at £35.
