Summer Body Beautiful

10th June 2011

Summer heralds the big dress down, of course, and it’s not all about getting the perfect bikini body, as summer frocks and cool tops and shorts mean bare arms, knees and other parts not easily reached by normal beauty products.

Mary Linehan offers some tips for overcoming seasonal deficiencies…

Undoubtedly, the ideal way to get the best summer body is a year-round project incorporating a healthy eating regime and exercise regime. We are what we don’t do in the same way that we are what we eat! If you’re a seasonal fitness fanatic and go for the burn only when needs must then you will need not only a good short sharp plan, but also a slew of good, results-driven products.

The upside of exercise and eating well is that it should go some way to helping improve your mood, too – which can only be a good thing in terms of helping to keep you motivated to reach your goals. Add a dose of seasonal sunshine and you should be set for a spot of self-indulgence, spa-style, to take some of the elbow grease out of buffing and polishing your body for top-to-toe summer perfection.

Keeping skin functioning healthily and in good condition is not just for the face. Too often skincare stops at our collars and it’s only when the summer months approach that we start to think about the chin downwards.

A body scrub does wonders for polishing up the appearance of the skin as well as stimulating lymphatic drainage and the elimination of toxins. It’s ideal for tricky areas such as the upper arms, where fatty deposits love to hang out and skin can be slacker, or where, for some, the pimply condition known as keratosis pilaris makes an unwelcome appearance and takes a concerted moisturising and buffing regime. Using a body brush religiously will help also and boost the work of your scrub. Darphin Nourishing Smoothing Body Scrub (£36) has bamboo particles and cranberry extract, together with a lovely blend of nourishing oils of apricot, safflower and macademia nut and leaves skin soft and silky.

The chest, bust and shoulders will all benefit from specialist beauty treatments to help the skin’s elasticity keeping it supple, smooth and firm. Mama Mio’s Boob Tube Bust & Neck Firmer (£28.50) is the perfect high performance bust care. Sweet almond, olive, avocado and evening primrose oils, plus dandelion and wild yam are firming, while Co Enzyme Q10 prevents and repairs collagen breakdown helping the skin retain firmness.

No self-respecting summer body can do without the best of moisturisers. I am not a fan of the array of body butters on offer, but I do make an exception for Caudalie Body Butter (£19). Orange blossom, shea butter and grapeseed oil leave skin soft and shimmering and looking cared for.

Hairy legs are the bane of the best summer body. While many people wax lyrical certainly through summer, a good epilator saves on messy shaving time. Braun Silk-pil 7 Dual Epilator (£99.99) with Gillette Venus Technology offers longer lasting epilation and super smooth skin and promises a whole new hair removal experience(!).

To put the finishing touches on the perfect summer body, a little light glow, whether from the sun’s rays, or with a little artificial, help makes for a sexier look. Elizabeth Arden Pure Finish Mineral Bronzing Powder (£24) in Bronze Glow does the trick. Brush this skin friendly sunlit illuminator gently over your cheekbones, décolletage and shoulders and you’re good to glow!
