New Routines

21st January 2011

The dawn of the New Year (which somehow doesn’t always seem to get going until halfway through January!) is a great opportunity to reassess your beauty routine. Take a flyer on some of the smaller, quirkier brands to give a touch of individuality, and bring a smile to your face, says Mary Linehan…

Rock and Roll…

…retro isn’t restricted to clothing; here’s a pair of
beauty brands that bring a quirky blast from the past…

Dry skin emergencies can hit us all – not just the over 45s! If your skin is prone to dehydration, particularly as seasons change, Steam Cream is a must-have to carry round with you. Light, fluffy and mousse-like to use, the oatmeal, organic jojoba and almond oils, plus cocoa butter all reboot and maintain moisture levels. This summery-scented, uplifting blend of orange blossom, neroli and rose absolute is a tonic, revitalising and refreshing for the skin, and doing wonders for your mood on a dark winter morning.

If you’re not familiar with Steam Cream, its USP is the packaging – plenty of fun, arty designs and limited editions to collect. Pick of the pops from its new launches is Vinyl, but ‘for the record’, there’s plenty more to choose from.

Steam Cream (£10 for 75g) is available from John Lewis,
Liberty, or on-line at

If your skin is dry, thirsty and prone to sensitivity, shea butter is one of the best natural hydrators you can use. Betty Hula, a cute little Americana-style, all-natural and Fairtrade beauty brand, has two new shea butter-based body moisturisers, to which they’ve added vitamin E and a wholesome concoction of aloe vera, coconut oil and cocoa butter, all exceptional skin conditioners in their own right.

These Hawaiian-inspired fragrances sound good enough to drink – choose from Champagne & Spice or Rum & Blackcurrant (retail £17.99.)

Hubble Bubble

This magical (and certified 100% organic) brand owes its existence in part to funding from The Prince’s Trust. That, and the skills of Hubble Bubble’ founder Helen Bebbington, trained as a clinical aromatherapist, homeopath and beauty therapist.

Created for those who love their beauty as ethical as their lifestyle, but don’t want to compromise on luxury or results, each of the eight products in the range is based on natural oils, butters, herbs and essential oils – chosen for their affinity with the skin, and their ability to deliver vital vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids deep into the layers of the skin, where they build healthy collagen and elastin, plus stimulate cells’ regeneration and help keep skin hydrated.

They’re ideal for both mature and dehydrated, sensitive skins because of the utterly buttery textures of the formulations, but even oilier skins can incorporate one product to use weekly as a skin treat.

Hero Product: Luscious Replenishing Elixir (£18) – an intensive daily treatment concocted with rosehip and evening primrose, rich in protective anti-
oxidants and GLAs, and essential oils of cedarwood, patchouli and ylang ylang.

Hard Labourer: Deep Purifying Cleansing Balm (£25) – melts away dirt, grime and make-up, (even waterproof mascara), leaving skin pepperminty fresh.
