Three Of The Best… Primers

10th September 2010

I have never been totally convinced, says mary Linehan, that we need layers and layers of product on skin for it to look flawless.

Primers are a case in point. However, as with all beauty products, it does depend on the quality of the product you’re using and if you have a problem skin tone or complexion, then trying a specialist product such as a primer could be just the trick.

Top makeup artist Laura Mercier shares her advice: ‘A primer is a fairly misunderstood product – most women skip using it because they don’t know what it is or what it does. A serum like gel primer seals in your moisturiser and provides a smooth surface for foundation. Primer will keep your make up from being absorbed into the skin, and therefore it will last much longer.’

Here are three of the best primers:

Lancôme La Base Pro (£25) A translucent, oil-free makeup base that incorporates Lancôme’s Elasto-Smooth™ technology. It leaves a non-greasy film on the skin to help disguise enlarged pores and fine lines and leaves the skin smoothed and softer.

Laura Mercier Oil-Free Foundation Primer (£27) Lightweight, long-wearing and oil-free, this has sebum-controlling properties so it’s great for oilier and combination skin types. Antioxidant vitamins A, C and E help protect the skin from environmental damage.

Mac Prep & Prime Skin Refined Zone (£13.50) Applies wet and dries to create a long-lasting matte finish that helps disguise pores and blemishes. Especially good for oily skin types.
