the 'Brandied Bronze' Look, by Clinique

Suddenly It's Summer

9th July 2010

One summer delight is the chance to lighten up, says Mary Linehan

There’s something freeing about ditching the foundation and heavier formulations for just a tinted moisturiser that allows your skin to breathe, a brush of bronze, lashings of mascara and some near-natural eye definition.

Brandied Bronze, Clinique’s new Summer 2010 Colour Collection is a case in point. Its limited edition Colour Surge Eye Shadow Palette (£22.50) offers long-lasting colour – just what you need in heat and humidity – in six complementary colours that you can mix and match, or wear solo. True Bronze Pressed Powder Bronzer (£20) in Sunkissed gives a light tan that you can build according to your skin tone, while Cream Shaper for Eyes (£13), is a water-resistant, colour-intense eye pencil in Chocolate Lustre that glides on for natural-looking definition. I am a huge fan of Clinique lipsticks and the summery Limited Edition Different Lipstick (£14.50) in Bronze Leaf is creamy and lightweight: perfect summer wear.

Better known for organic and biodynamic skincare, Dr. Hauschka’s has a Summer Impressions limited edition collection (free from preservatives, synthetic chemical fragrances and colours), with eye and lip colours in handy makeup palettes (£40), ideal for a breezy summer look. Based on two co-ordinated colour themes – Warm Breeze (a warm, earthy mix of red soft orange and gold) and Cool Breeze (apricot, brown and acqua), there is also a lightweight Bronzing Fluid (£23) in two delicately shimmering shades, Beige and Bronze. For a light dusting of colour to add definition and highlight cheeks, the collection also offers two warm and cool shades in a two-tone Powder Duo (£32) compact.

According to celebrity makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury, “A nude lip-liner suited to your skin-tone is incredible for a natural summer makeup look.” For her myFace Cosmetics range, Charlotte created a nude lip liner for three different skin tones – Fair, Medium and Medium/Dark. Her tip to get the best from your lip liner? “When outlining your lips, draw slightly outside the natural lip-line to make your lips look fuller and give you an amazing sexy pout.” MyFace Nude Lip Pencil (£6.49) glides on gently and you can top it with a matching lipstick or gloss. Fantastic, too, for summer wear, are the fabulous Paul & Joe Lip Pencil Duals (£13), from the Sahara Sparkles 2010 Summer Collection. In two textures (matte and pearl) – and five shade combinations, including Nude. Made with moisturising jojoba and orange flower oils, they help keep lips in tip top condition in the heat and humidity, too.

Pared down, incidentally, doesn’t mean compromising on sexy. Just delicately layer on more colour, or top up mascara to optimise impact, or opt for high gloss on your lips to highlight your pout. Or try the Paul & Joe Sahara Sparkles Finishing Powder (£18) – it’s champagne shimmer formulation delivers a warm glow that creates a natural semi-matte sheen on the skin. Stunning summer beauty.
