If morning is just one mad dash around the house trying to get your face on before you make the train, celebrity make-up artist Karen Mason has a few tips and product selections for you. Here she tells Mary Linehan how to cut your make-up time down to 10 minutes…

Karen Mason is a top make-up artist who has worked with some of our biggest stars, including Catherine Zeta Jones, Kate Moss and Deborah Harry. She also works on special projects for Clinique.

A good base is really important – never more than when you are in a hurry. I really love Chanel’s Teint Innocence (£28). This is the lazy person’s foundation! You get good coverage with really great effects very quickly and the high pigmentation gives great colour payoff! So, if you are looking to speed up your routine, or need a quick touch-up, this is the one.

When applying your foundation include the eye area as well and then give a quick swipe of a loose powder. My favourite is Laura Mercier Eye Brightening Powder (£18) , but you can use any loose powder.

Cream eyeshadows are slick and quick and give a nice wash of colour over the skin. Clinique Cream Eyeshadow (£13.50) is excellent and the shades are soft and quite neutral. Again, this is a great timesaver – the last thing you need is to spend time fiddling around layering and perfecting colour.

Take an eye pencil and outline the eyes making sure that you apply it between the lashes. Widen the line slightly on the outer corners to give shape and lift to the eye.

Go for coloured pencils, too, they’re softer and, for older women especially, they’re a great way to experiment. Too many women are afraid of colour but good use of it softens and enhances your features. You should only use black, actually, if you have dark colouring.

The trick to applying eyeliner is a little bit at a time, perfecting as you go along. With a little practice it’s very quick to do.

Then loads of mascara! Clinique Lash Power Mascara (£14.50) is one of the best for daywear. It goes on and stays on throughout the day right up until you wash it off with warm water.

Finish off with a slick of gloss lipstick or lipgloss. It’s a lighter wash of colour and much less time-consuming than trying to put on a red or berry.
