Autumn is a tricky season to navigate: one minute it’s t-shirt weather and the next you’re digging out your thickest, warmest coat from the back of your wardrobe. It’s the same with your beauty regime... as summer overlaps with winter, it’s time to adapt accordingly and cherry-pick the best of the new season’s offerings.

Think of this time of year as the opportunity for a post- summer-detox. It’s all about nourishing, rejuvenating and protecting against the harsher climate ahead. Body Shop’s new Oils of Life range perfectly sums up this mantra, with a romantically enticing back story. They claim to have “searched all over the world and selected from three continents, three of the most precious and potent natural seed oils known since ancient times for their richness in essential nutrients and supreme restoring properties.” I try their delicious facial oil and am impressed: rosehip, camellia and black cumin add up to a surprisingly enticing scent which heightens luxuriously as applied, leaving no trace of greasiness. The oil can be used instead of a serum to soak up your usual night-cream. (I always liken this effect – albeit less romantically – to a damp sponge or mop being able to soak up spills better than a dry one).

Dewy skin renewed, it’s time to address your make-up. It’s tempting to try and maintain a lingering summer tan with bronzer, but if you have naturally pale skin, then this can be a classic mistake. (Nobody wants to look orange, right?) To get that instant glow that works in the cooler autumn light, it’s time to invest in a winter bronzer, such as Bobbi Brown’s Shimmer Brick range. There are shades to suit all skin types, but I love the pinky tones of ‘Rose’. Swirl a blusher brush and apply lightly all over, or just on the apples of your cheeks. This is a great multi-tasking hero product, as you can pick out your favourite stripes of colour with a thinner brush and use on the cheeks or the eyes, and the ivory strip also works nicely as a highlighter along the cheekbones.

Next up – hair. Unless you are blessed with lustrous straight locks or rock a very short, chic look, the autumn drizzle will play havoc with your hair and conspire to create the dreaded frizz. Aveda propose to have the answer with their new Aveda Smooth Infusion Hair Masque. Using natural ingredients, including organic shea butter, and rose and bergamot essential oils they claim to “reduce frizz and unwanted volume by half.” You can also use their styling creme to boost the staying power of your blow-dry.

If all else fails, it’s time to embrace the longer evenings and treat yourself to a long, hot scented bath. Light some candles and pour in some Jo Malone Amber and Lavender bath oil. Your grey, drizzly day will be a distant memory.
