The Individual Touch

7th June 2013

Quirky or classic, art is a great way to personalise your interior scheme and make your home stand out from the crowd. Next week’s Affordable Art Fair on Hampstead Heath (13-16 June) presents the ideal opportunity to invest in a piece you’ll love for a long time. Fair Director Romy Westwood offers some suggestions to help budding art enthusiasts make that big decision…

The Affordable Art Fair is perfect for anyone keen to adorn their walls with original art. It’s famous for both its friendly atmosphere and its commitment to democratising the buying of art. The atmosphere is fab – relaxed, friendly and fun, encouraging visitors to browse exhibiting galleries and lose themselves in art.

Established names and emerging talent will all be offering work at affordable prices ranging from £40 to £4,000, with a great deal available for under £1,000. The art on display is available to purchase and most pieces – from original prints and oil paintings to sculptures and photography – can be taken home that very same day.

Ahead of the fair, here are a few tips to help you make the most of a day looking for art and be certain that the piece – or pieces – that you choose will suit your home.

Be prepared: Before you set out, have a think about the space you are looking to fill: How big is it? How well lit? What is the colour scheme? If a perfect match is important to you, then take along a couple of colour swatches if you have them. Look online at the exhibiting galleries in advance, and, most importantly, wear comfortable shoes.

Pace yourself: Finding that perfect piece of art shouldn’t be daunting. The fair should be a pleasant and inspiring experience, not an exhausting one. Grab a copy of the guide and take your time, giving yourself opportunity to consider all the wonderful pieces of art on show, and refresh your senses in the café or wine bar.

Trust your instincts: Buying a piece of art is all about an emotional connection you feel with the work. Trust your own taste and go for pieces that you will take pleasure in viewing day in and day out.

Have fun: Enjoy yourself with all that’s on offer: as well as buying you can meet art industry experts, learn about techniques and have a super day out...
